This Resin Build Went Wrong… So I Kept Going
2 min read
In today’s build, I take on a unique woodturning challenge: creating a crystal-clear epoxy sphere featuring a small Ferrari model car suspended above a stunning piece of Australian mallee burl.
For this project, I used a clear deep-pour epoxy resin to achieve maximum transparency and depth. However, I quickly ran into an unexpected issue—the resin began to dissolve parts of the Ferrari’s paint, causing some detail loss on the model. Rather than scrap the piece, I pushed forward to see how the final result would turn out… and the journey was worth it!
The sphere is turned on the lathe, shaped to a perfect globe, and finished with a three-stage polishing process to bring out a high-gloss, glass-like shine. The rich textures of the mallee burl paired with the floating Ferrari make for an eye-catching and truly one-of-a-kind display piece.
