Hello, friends! This is another log from the batch of firewood I picked up a few years back. The two branches on the piece really drew my attention; I had never previously turned a piece like this, and I was curious how it might turn out. Given its length, I knew a bowl (at least, a traditional-looking bowl) was out of the question, so I opted for more of a…. I don’t even know what to call this. An open top vase or something? Either way, I’m quite pleased with the final design. I also had no idea what the wood was going to look like inside, but I was very excited to find some nice spalting going on in the deeper grains.

Like my other few live-edge "bowls", the most difficult part of this project was the sanding. No clue if other woodworkers have a hack to this or not, but, for the parts of these pieces that aren’t perfectly round, I feel like I’m stuck hand sanding, which eats up a good bit of time. If I recall, I believe this was sanded up to 400-600 grit, and it was finished with tung oil for a more natural matte look.
