Hello, friends! This log was from the same batch of firewood that I picked up from my parents’ house two years back (wow, how time flies). You may have seen the first log I turned, which was a super wormy log and the last video on the channel right before my hiatus (https://youtu.be/nNL_hOeQ7iQ). This one here, however, was a whole other beast. It was a very irregular and crazy shape when I first started, and I was a little concerned that my lathe wouldn’t be able to manage something of this size that was this awkward. Early on in the video, you can see that my lathe stand was shaking a fair bit, but, thankfully, nothing came loose during the turning. Slowly but surely, I was able to round things out and the shaking calmed down. The most difficult part of this project was ultimately the sanding. Because of how irregular the log was, I could only sand part of the bowl with it turning on the lathe. The rest had to be hand sanded, and let me tell you, a lot of elbow grease was put into this (don’t worry, I spared you all from having to watch too much of that). Once sanded, I simply finished it with some tung oil to give it a more natural and matte-looking finish.
This is only the second live edge bowl I’ve turned, and I have to say, I really like how this one turned out. The irregular live edge almost gives the bowl a "maple leaf" look from some angles, and I think that looks really cool. What do you all think? I’d love to hear down below!
