When I started working on the sapphire one, I knew right away that I was going to love the design, so I started working on this purple one pretty much at the exact same time; it just took a little while to getting the video done! As with the previous project, I purchased the figured maple round from a local exotic woods supplier. I first turned the round into the approximate shape I wanted for the final bowl, leaving everything slightly thicker than what I was planning the final bowl to be. I then built up a small mould around the bowl&#8217;s rim using a plastic poster board I picked up from Michael&#8217;s and filled the rim with Alumilite&#8217;s Clear Cast epoxy resin. The resin was dyed using a purple mica pigment. After letting the resin fully cure, I then popped the bowl back on the lathe, did the final turning to get everything to its final thickness, wet sanded the bowl up to 2000 grit, and then applied a finish using Waterlox&#8217;s Original formula. Much like the sapphire rim bowl, I am very pleased with this one, and I think the figured maple looks even better the second time around!<\/p>\n<p>Also, for those who may not have seen my post two weeks ago, and were wondering where that week&#8217;s video was, I am unfortunately dropping my video frequency down to once every four weeks, just for the near future. Life outside the shop has been a little hectic recently (we actually just moved last month, and so the shop is currently in need of reassembly!), and so I am quite behind on projects.
